The Moorabool Valley represents one of Australia’s finest cool climate wine regions with a fast growing reputation for boutique wineries producing premium hand crafted wines. Nestled between Geelong & Ballarat, the Moorabool Valley’s small, family run vineyards provide rich and intense low yield fruit, perfect for crafting into award winning wines. Family owned and operated wineries dominate the Valley giving visitors the opportunity to meet with the people who tend the vines and produce a wide range of classic and alternative wines

With a history extending back to 1842, Swiss immigrants chose the Moorabool Valley to plant some of Victoria’s earliest vines. Today, a small band of passionate winemakers embrace the challenge of producing superior cool climate wines from the tough limestone and basalt base which forms this region’s unique terroir.

Where and What
On the road to Ballarat is the Moorabool Valley, an intriguing sub-region with a concentration of five-star wineries. There’s a volcano in the area that means black basalt and limestone soils, and due to the terrain it sits in a rain shadow – conditions such as drought make this one of the most complicated places to make wine, yet it’s here that some of the region’s best winemaking happens. It’s home to old, close-planted vines with low yields that produce special wines – ‘complexity’ and ‘character’ are the catch-cries. Pinot noir is the calling card, but its warmer, inland plains have seen producers experiment with some unusual varieties, including gamay, pinot meunier, sangiovese and cabernet franc, to name a few.

Visit the Moorabool Valley with us to discover how their talented winemakers turn a tough climate into superior wines. Here’s some of the Moorabool Valley Vineyards we typically visit.

Moorabool Ridge
Deep in the Valley perched on the edge of the Moorabool River is a shepherd’s cottage built in 1856. This historic building is now home to Moorabool Ridge’s tasting room. This is a vineyard showing how talented winemakers utilise the surrounding climate to their advantage.

Lethbridge Wines
Chances are Ray or Maree will be greeting you as you enter the ‘Lethbridge wine hall’, the passionate couple tend one of Australia’s most environmentally sustainable vineyards and can often be found conducting tutored tours of their carefully tended vines. A stand out vineyard in any region.

Clyde Park Vineyard
Clyde park is the largest wine grower in the region with thirty five acres producing award winning Pinot Noir’s along with Shiraz and Chardonnay. With some of the oldest vines in the Moorabool valley Clyde park is worth the journey and an absolute highlight.

Austins Wines
A longstanding love affair with the Moorabool Valley and a commitment to consistently producing superior Burgundy style pinot noir have placed Richard & Pam Austin along with son Scott as one of the largest family holdings of pinot noir vines in Australia. The best way to understand the philosophy and determination behind Austins is to taste the wine.

Provenance Wines
Provenance Wines set up on the edge of Geelong’s infamous river this award winning winery has quickly rooted itself into Geelong’s rich wine tapestry. Making cool climate classics and serving up premium local produce – Provenance has existed to achieve the one simple goal: to make great wines that reveal the fruit quality of special vineyards.
